Westside Story

Westside branch library in Galway goes live with RFID. The Interleaf Tag Team have been busy tagging the 40,000 items in Galway's Westside Library Branch which is now live with 2 x 3M RFID Self-Issue kiosks.

Since the RFID self service systems were installed at the beginning of the year the members of Westside library have embraced the new technology with great enthusiasm – under the encouraging and watchful eye of Bernie Kelly and the staff of Westside. The profile of the members covers all ages – and it is very interesting, in the early afternoons, watching young mothers juggling an armful of books, a handful of library cards, their enthusiastic kids and the new technology, all with consummate ease.

The decision was taken that all features of the system would be implemented from the beginning. Library members can view their current loan status, check if they have any outstanding fines, pay their fines with cash, renew items whether they have them with them or not, check out new items and return items. All transactions can be backed up by a printed receipt if required.

The next step is to explore how the 3M Digital Library Assistant (DLA) can help staff manage the library stock by offering facilities which were unimagined before RFID was introduced.
